Exhibition at Hoop Gallery, Torquay 27-30 April 2023

Liquid Polyrhythm is an exhibition by Torquay-based architect, drummer and musico-spatial creative practitioner, Jeremy J Ham. Founded on the concept that ‘music is data’, the exhibition explores the intersection of music, spatial design and computation. Jeremy has developed an unique method of translating the data from the performance of a range of drum solos into 3D computer models which are then exhibited as digital prints on canvas. Liquid Polyrhythm illustrates how the unique attributes of drumming performance can be translated into beautiful three dimensional ‘liquid’ forms. The exhibition opening will showcase the artist’s work in soundscapes and virtual reality.

Ars Electronica Aoteoroa

In June, 2022, Jeremy was invited to perform and exhibit at the New Zealand iteration of the Ars Electronica festival. See https://www.ars.nz/synaespatia-2022/ for more details.

Abstract: Synaespatia is the experience of sound and music as spectacular and dynamic manifestations in virtual reality: the sensing of sound as space through the technologies of a Networked Musicospatial Virtual Environment (NMSVE). The NMSVE, developed as a collaboration between Dr Uwe Woessner and Dr Jeremy J Ham, integrates digital musical instruments, virtual instrumentation, live and recorded sound, spatialisation using gaming technologies and screen-based display. These can be networked to enable interaction and inter-continental musicospatial performance. We demonstrate a cross-domain performance platform that enables the creation of vast improvised soundscapes and spectacular visualisations. We encourage audience interaction and the exploration of the synergies between the sonic and spatial domains through synaespatia.

KLG Sonic Arts Symposium

Jeremy and Dr Uwe Woessner presented their work on ‘Synaespatia’ at the KLG Sonic Arts Symposium in May, 2021.

This performative workshop demonstrates collaborative creative design research operating at the intersection of the musical and spatial (musico-spatial) domains. Covid has forced new ways of collaboration between the team: a musico-spatial performer based in Australia (Dr Jeremy J Ham) and a VR expert based in Germany (Dr Uwe Woessner). No longer able to travel, we have worked on ways to enable new modes of musico-spatial performance. Engagement in digital technologies has turned constraints into opportunities. This has led to in the transformation of the original Musico-Spatial Virtual Environment (MSVE) into a networked performance environment that enables synchronous dyadic musico-spatial performance from physically-distanced performers from around the world. Through these new modes of performance, we  can experience live music and sound as real-time manifestations in the spatial domain as ‘synaespatia’.
